Custom Markups in Value Management

In Ediphi, when using VM Decisions in your estimate, you may notice that Custom VM Markups do not automatically transfer to the Base Bid, even when the VM Decision is accepted. This is expected behavior.

What is a Custom VM Markup?

A Custom VM Markup refers to any markup that is manually created in the Markups tab within a VM Decision that does NOT have the “Use Base Bid Markups” option enabled (below). These markups are unique to the sandbox of the particular VM Decision you are working on, and do not affect the base bid markups on your Estimate.

What You Need to Know

  • Custom VM Markups within VM Decisions are sandboxed. They are provided for visibility and exploration only; they do not affect the total cost of the estimate.
  • If you want a Custom VM Markup to impact the Base Bid, you’ll need to manually recreate it in the Base Bid markup structure.
    • Note that as a VM Decision is accepted, the line items will be marked up by Base Bid markups automatically.

Why It Works This Way

Custom VM Markups can rely on formula values like All Above Markups, which are calculated based on the order and presence of other markups. If these supporting markups don’t exist or aren’t duplicated within the Base Bid, the formula will break, leading to incorrect totals.

To ensure markup calculations remain accurate and predictable, we isolate VM Markups from the Base Bid unless you explicitly choose to recreate them manually.

If you have a custom Markup in a VM Decision that you'd like to use in the Base Bid:

  1. Within your Estimate, open the Value Mgmt section, then go to the Markups tab within a VM Decision where your custom Markups are located.
  2. Using the VM Decision as a reference, recreate the markup manually by switching to the Base Bid.
  3. Ensure all dependent markups are added in the correct order if using compounded formulas like All Above Markups.
