Custom Alternate Markups

In Ediphi, when using Alternates in your estimate, you may notice that Custom Alternate Markups do not automatically transfer to the Base Bid—even when the Alternate is accepted. This is by design.

What is a Custom Alternate Markup?

A Custom Alternate Markup refers to any markup that is manually created in a Markups Alternate tab that does NOT have the “Use Base Bid Markups” option enabled (below). These markups are unique to the sandbox of the particular Alternate you are working on, and do not affect the base bid markups on your Estimate.

What You Need to Know

  • Custom Markups within Alternates are sandboxed. They are provided for visibility and exploration only—they do not affect the total cost of the estimate.
  • If you want a custom Alternate Markup to impact the Base Bid, you’ll need to manually recreate it in the Base Bid markup structure.
    • Note that as an Alternate is accepted, their line items will be marked up by Base Bid markups automatically.

Why It Works This Way

Custom Alternate Markups can rely on formula values like All Above Markups, which calculate based on the order and presence of other markups. If these supporting markups don’t exist or aren’t duplicated within the Base Bid, the formula will break—leading to incorrect totals.

To ensure markup calculations remain accurate and predictable, we isolate Alternate Markups from the Base Bid unless you explicitly choose to recreate them manually.

Recommended Workflow

If you have a custom Markup in an Alternate that you'd like to use in the Base Bid:

  1. Within your Estimate, go to the Markups tab, and select the specific Alternate where your custom Markups are located.
  2. Recreate the markup manually by switching to the Base Bid.

  3. Ensure all dependent markups are added in the correct order if using compounded formulas like All Above Markups.
